BELLE
OtakuFeed found out that GKIDS unveiled that it would start airing Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chizu’s brand new BELLE (Ryū to Sobakasu no Hime, truly “The Dragon and the Freckled Princess”) anime movie in the U.S. on January 14. The movie will be airing in English and also in Japanese with English subtitles.
BELLE was screened in Japan on July 16. In addition, the film has IMAX airings in 38 theaters in Japan. This turns BELLE into one of the first of Hosoda’s movies to have IMAX airings.
The movie has received a collective sum of 6,397,159,950 yen (about US$56.44 million) as of Sunday. The movie is Hosoda’s highest-grossing movie. MX4D airings for the movie will begin on October 22.
France’s Cannes Film Festival first aired the movie in the festival’s Cannes Premiere part on July 15. After that, it scored the Official Selection at the festival for Hosoda. (The director’s earlier Mirai movie aired at the Directors’ Fortnight, a nonpartisan part taken in correspondence to the festival, in 2018.) Next, the movie held its North American screening at New York Film Festival on September 25. After that, the movie will then have its West Coast screening in Los Angeles’ Animation Is Film Festival, from October 22 till the 24th.
Hosoda (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, The Boy and The Beast, Mirai) supervised and made the scripts for the movie and is also recognized for the initial work. The film records Studio Chizu’s 10th anniversary. Taisei Iwasaki (Blood Blockade Battlefront, Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan, The Naked Director) is the movie’s music supervisor and songwriter.
